Kudos to the officials of the Nigeria Customs Service for the discovery of 1,100 pump-action rifles smuggled into the country from Turkey in a concealed container purportedly conveying wash basins at the Tin-Can Island Port in Lagos.
This discovery coming just about eight months after Customs operatives intercepted 661 pieces of pump-action rifles in Lagos is worrisome and it is a cause for concern especially as 2019 general election draws closer.
I call on the Comptroller-General of Customs, Colonel Hameed Alli (retd) and his team to immediately set up a high powered investigation team to unmask the syndicates and their collaborators behind this heinous crime in order to bring them to justice so as to serve as deterrent to others.
Finally, with the various ongoing agitations by groups, farmers and herdsmen clashes and threat of insurgents in parts of the country, security agents in our airports, seas and land borders must be at red alert not to allow unauthorised arms and ammunitions into our dear country because of the collateral damage it may cause the country
